A desander is a key component of a solid control system in drilling operations. It is used to remove finer solids, such as sand and silt, from the drilling mud. Here’s how a desander works:

Inlet: The drilling mud, along with the solids, enters the desander through its inlet.

Tangential entry: The drilling mud enters the desander tangentially, creating a centrifugal force that causes the heavier solids to move towards the wall of the desander.

Spiral flow: The drilling mud flows in a spiral manner inside the desander, with the heavier solids settling on the wall due to the centrifugal force.

Solids separation: As the drilling mud continues to flow, the settled solids accumulate at the bottom of the desander cone. The separated solids are then discharged through an outlet at the bottom of the cone.

Overflow: The clean drilling mud, with reduced solids content, exits the desander through an overflow outlet located at the top of the cone.

Adjustment: The effectiveness of the solids separation in the desander can be adjusted by altering the pressure and flow rate of the drilling mud.

It’s important to note that a desander is typically used in conjunction with other solid control equipment, such as shale shakers and desilters, to achieve a comprehensive solids control process. The combination of these components helps ensure efficient separation and removal of solids from the drilling mud, maintaining its quality and optimizing drilling performance.
