The role of flocculants in mud and slurry purification and tailings treatment

Pub Date:Apr 03, 2024    |    Views:200    |

Reducing the moisture content of mud cakes is crucial for the disposal and resource utilization of sludge.  Therefore, mud concentration and dehydration play a vital role in removing moisture from tailings and are of crucial importance in the field of sludge treatment.  Their role is to reduce the water content and volume of the tailings, making them more suitable for storage, transportation, and subsequent treatment.  To ensure the concentration and dehydration effect of the tailings, conditioning is usually required to improve their concentration and dehydration performance.  Flocculants are often added for tailings conditioning.  Flocculants are chemical agents that can aggregate small particles in mud and water, forming larger particles that can be easily filtered out by a filter press.  Before filtration, flocculants are generally added to the slurry to form flocs, which is a necessary condition for the operation of a filter press.  In engineering applications such as plate and frame or chamber filter presses, screw presses, belt filter presses, centrifuges, and other sludge dewatering equipment, the use of flocculants for sludge conditioning is essential for dewatering.

The role of flocculants in filtration and dewatering is to promote the aggregation of small particles suspended in a liquid into larger clusters.  This is usually achieved using high molecular weight polymers.  In filtration and dewatering processes, flocculants can perform the following functions:

1. Improve the quality of the filter cake: By adding an appropriate amount of flocculants, the small particles suspended in the liquid can be aggregated into larger particles, accelerating the settling rate of the particles and facilitating the formation of a filter cake.

2. Reduce the moisture content of the filter cake: Flocculants can cause small particles to aggregate into clusters, which are easily captured by the filter cloth during the filtration and dewatering process, thereby reducing the moisture content in the filter cake.

In summary, the role of flocculants in filtration and dewatering is to improve the quality of the filter cake, reduce the moisture content of the filter cake, improve dewatering efficiency, and reduce the energy consumption of the filter press.
